HERBAL OILS 101 MINI COURSE OUTLINE:

LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED WITH HERBAL OILS
Herb-infused oils are a staple preparation in any herbalist’s home or clinical apothecary. They have a wide array of uses and are powerful formulas for extracting beneficial plant constituents. In this lesson, you will learn how herbal oils are used for culinary, wellness, and skincare purposes, a list of potential herbs to infuse in oil for select common conditions, such as stiff joints, itchy skin, respiratory congestion, and wounds, the supplies you’ll need to have on hand to make your own herbal oils at home, and some safety considerations to be mindful of when making herbal oils.

LESSON 2: CHOOSING THE RIGHT OILS AND HERBS
There are many, many herbs and oils to choose from, and learning about them and the various oil-infusion techniques can be the key to making potent products no matter what the combination is. In this lesson, you will explore the chemistry of carrier oils, how to choose herbs, including 12 herbs commonly used to make herbal oils, how to wilt and dry herbs for use in oil infusions, and some of the science behind the extraction process to help you make the most potent infused oils possible.

LESSON 3: MAKING HERBAL OILS
While there are several different ways to make herb-infused oils, there are two primary measurement methods you can use and multiple maceration techniques, each with its own pros and cons. In this lesson, you will dive deeper into creating potent oils, choose the best measurement method (folk or mathematical ratio), and select from several maceration techniques to determine which is best for the herbs and oils you’re using (with several video tutorials to guide you). You will also learn how to extend the shelf life of your finished oils, and find some tips and tricks to help you troubleshoot some common problems encountered when making herbal oils.

LESSON 4: HERBAL OIL ADDITIVES AND RECIPES
Making herbal oils can be as easy as infusing a single herb into a single carrier oil to enlist it in your herbal toolkit or as advanced as combining several herbal oil simples to create a blend of carrier oils to support a particular need. In this lesson, you will learn about some additional additives that can be added to oils to enhance their function or aesthetic, as well as find a number of herb-infused oil recipes that center around use in food, wellness, and skincare so you can start to put the oils you’ve made into action. Video demonstrations will guide and inspire you as you see these recipes come to life.

LESSON 5: USING HERBAL OILS IN TOPICAL PREPARATIONS
If you’re wondering if there are other ways to put your herbal oils to use, we have you covered. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to transform your herb-infused oils into salves and balms, creams and lotions, and body butters. We’ll explore the pros and cons of each preparation type and its shelf life, as well as provide troubleshooting tips and instructions on how to make and use them. You’ll also find specific recipes to try out and tutorial videos so you can see all of these next steps in action.
